A discrete operator calculus for ®nite dierence approximations

In this article we describe two areas of recent progress in the construction of accurate and robust ®nite di€erence algorithms for continuum dynamics. The support operators method (SOM) provides a conceptual framework for deriving a discrete operator calculus, based on mimicking selected properties of the di€erential operators. In this paper, we choose to preserve the fundamental conservation l...

Spline Discrete Differential Forms and a New Finite Difference Discrete Hodge Operator

We construct a new set of discrete differential forms based on B-splines of arbitrary degree as well as an associated Hodge operator. The theory is first developed in 1D and then extended to multi-dimension using tensor products. We link our discrete differential forms with the theory of chains and cochains. The spline discrete differential forms are then applied to the numerical solution of Ma...

Some Estimates for Finite Difference Approximations

Some estimates for the approximation of optimal stochastic control problems by discrete time problems are obtained. In particular an estimate for the solutions of the continuous time versus the discrete time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations is given. The technique used is more analytic than probabilistic. Key words, diffusion process, Markov chain, dynamic programming, finite difference, Hamil...

Calculus and Finite Difference Operators

This paper shows that the naturally induced discrete differentiation operators induced from a wavelet-Galerkin finite-dimensional approximation to a standard function space approximates differentiation with an error of order 0(h2d+2), where d is the degree of the wavelet system. The degree of a wavelet system is defined as one less than the degree of the lowest-order nonvanishing moment of the ...

Finite difference approximations for a fractional diffusion/anti-diffusion equation

A class of finite difference schemes for solving a fractional anti-diffusive equation, recently proposed by Andrew C. Fowler to describe the dynamics of dunes, is considered. Their linear stability is analyzed using the standard Von Neumann analysis: stability criteria are found and checked numerically. Moreover, we investigate the consistency and convergence of these schemes.
